The Leeds Muslim Youth Forum (LMYF) was established in 2005 in the immediate aftermath of the tragic 7/7 London bombings, a national trauma that changed the lives of many-especially young Muslims across the UK.

Who We Are

The forum was set up as a grassroots platform to amplify the voices of Muslim youth in Leeds, empowering them to speak for themselves and engage constructively with wider society. LMYF has always operated with a deep commitment to dialogue, civic engagement and community cohesion.

The Forum provides young Muslims with a range of support and development opportunities which enable them to become more active within their community and have a positive influence on others. We work in partnership with local authorities, statutory agencies, voluntary organisations, and any other institution that is as committed as we are to eradicating discrimination, and making a positive impact within our community.

Aims & Objectives

To promote, support and develop the needs of young people who live in the Leeds.

To actively challenge inequality in service provision in all its guises and prioritise working with young people whose opportunities may be limited by economic and social disadvantage.

To strive towards building better relationships between young people from different backgrounds through the provision of information, leisure and recreational services alongside other support services.

To empower young people to become actively involved in the community by providing training, capacity building and other support services.

To provide services and facilities in a way that is culturally appropriate, and ensure that we are accessible to young people of all backgrounds.

Our Impact

Over the years, LMYF has delivered a range of youth-led initiatives that bring leadership, culture, sport, and community action together:

Leadership Programme

Our flagship Youth Ambassador Programme has equipped dozens of young Muslims with the skills, confidence, and mentoring to become role models, community leaders, and civic voices across Leeds.

I AM MUSLIM Campaign

Our flagship Youth Ambassador Programme has equipped dozens of young Muslims with the skills, confidence, and mentoring to become role models, community leaders, and civic voices across Leeds.

Purani Yaadein (Old Memories)

An intergenerational heritage project that connected young people with elders in the community, capturing stories, memories, and migration histories to strengthen cultural pride and shared understanding.

Sports & Wellbeing Initiative

From the Hijabi Runners initiative promoting fitness and confidence among young Muslim women, to wider youth sports activities, we’ve used sport as a tool for wellbeing, inclusion, and empowerment.

Leadership Development

Delivering neighbourhood projects and social action campaigns, our young people have led change on the issues that matter most to them through the offer of micro-grants.
